Soap of Provence

In France, soap has been used since Antiquity. Pline l’ancien reports in its natural History that the Gallic people used a product containing tallow and ashes to dye their hair into russet-red. They use as a bleaching agent for hair. Marseilles has soap manufacturers starting from XIIe century which used as raw material olive oil produced locally. Sulphur (at the time the word “sulphur” indicated sodium carbonate) is in ashes coming from the combustion of a plant, the salicorne. In 1688, the Edict of Colbert, minister of Louis XIV, regulated the manufacture of soap. Soap manufacturers had to cease their activity during the summer because heat harmed the quality of the soap. According to article III of this edict: “We are not able to make use in the Factory of Soap, with the barrille, soda or ashes, of any grease, butters nor other matters; but only of the pure olive oils, mixture of fat, confiscation of the goods. ” This regulation ensured the quality of soap which made Marseilles soap factories famous. At the same time, soap factories settled in the area, in Salon de Provence, Toulon or Arles. In the XVIIIth century, the number of soap increased from 20 to 48. After a crisis during the French revolution, Marseilles industry continued to develop until counting 62 soap factories in 1813. Sulphur was then obtained from sea water, process invented by Nicolas Leblanc. Since 1820, new fat content imported and arriving by the harbour of Marseilles. Sesame, coconut, groundnut and palm oils are used for the manufacture of soap. The Marseilles soap factories underwent the competition of the soap factories English or Parisian, these latter tallow employing which gives less expensive soap.
