The history of the perfume
merges with French history and
even goes beyond: as early as
the Roman empire lavender was
used to scent the linen and
the body of the gladiators.
The word Lavender could even
come from the latin “lavare”
which means to purify, which
from the beginning shows a
certain ambiguity between the
scenting function of this
plant and its function of
wellbeing, and of health. In
the 16th century, a kind of
revolution took place
beginning in Grasse: the
tanners inspired by the mode
of scented gloves in Italy and
taking advantage of the
exceptional climate of the
region, cultivated innumerable
scented plants. Consequently,
the city becames through the
centuries, the capital of the
perfume industry, amassing
knowledge about the use of
natural products, and retained
this position until the
beginning of the 20th century.
At that time, a great
agricultural change took place
in haute Provence lavender
began to be cultivated whereas
wild lavender had simply been
picked until then .then came
the apogee of natural
perfumery, of agriculture at
the service of perfumery,
shaping the landscapes with
Lavender fields. Discover our
selection of lavender sachets,
